Brief 16 // Typocircle // Publication Front Covers

To keep these products along with the idea of being limited edition and a high quality design, I wanted to introduce the use of printing techniques within the books.

Other products within the promotional side of the project are going to screen printed / embossed, so I thought I could bring these elements within the front covers of the publications. This will tie the two sides of the projects together and it also fits in with the idea of creating a limited edition publication.

For the front covers I wanted to use the image of the designer / studio as the main background image, but also include information about what the book was / have the typocircle identity on it. To run with the theme of the publications and make them more 'special' I thought about using two different stocks and having two front covers. The top cover would be smaller so it would still show part of the image of the designer below. Both elements of the cover would be screen printed, but having them on two layers it will allow the big images to be in vibrant colours and stand out.

In order to screen print the images, I have half toned them. The name of the designer / studio will be printed onto this stock, the colour of the image will be either a single colour - blue or green or a gradient of the two. Which ever colour is used the opposite will be used for the designer / studio name.

The bottom white layer, will be the lilac stock - this is going to be used throughout the whole branding, so again it will tie it into the promotional side of the project.

As you can see in this image above, the lilac stock will be smaller so that part of the image and name is shown. On this second layer, the title of the publication, designer and typocircle identity will be printed onto it.

Both these layers have followed the same grid and layout idea as the inside of the publication so they both link together. Also the final factor of the front cover is that the top lilac stock will wrap around the right hand edge of the publication - this will stop the book from being able to be opened, the edge of the stock will be perforated, so the user will have to rip it open to read the publication. Even after it is ripped it will still be able to be used and kept as the top cover will still be intact and the right size.

The other front covers follow the same design idea and route.

Made Thought -
the difference with this publication front cover is that the studio is founded by two people. As the covers on the other publication will be the same on back and front, this one will be different as the second founder of the company will be printed onto the back cover.

I think these desigs and layouts fit with the style of the design within the inners of the publication, using the screenprint technique on this part of the design makes it more special and more considered as a design and as a limited edition publication - each one will print differently, hence being more special.

The added features with the rip off edge, again play to that idea of special edition, but also makes it more of an interaction for the user as they have to physical be involved with the publication much more than normal, hopefully having to interact with it in this way, it will make it more interesting and they will read through it.

The publication will be bound with a nickel binding screw. Again to add to the limited edition aesthetic.
