Brief 2 // Yoke // Invitation design

From the mock ups that me and Eve had designed for the invitations we decided that we wanted to get them printed and ready for Christmas, this then left us plenty of time to dispatch them when we came back from the christmas break.

For the exhibition itself the theme is dialogue, which creatives can submit to, this is along the theme of dialogue. For the invites we are incorporating a small screen print for this we thought it would be a good idea to set the brief to ourselves and create artwork along the theme of dialogue, we would then join each of our artwork together to create the final designs for the screen print within the invite.

Below shows our A5 invites mockups we made a few weeks ago that have slits in to hold the A6 postcards. Earlier this week I found an invite that shares the same idea to us that are for a Dylan Couter exhibition. The use of monotype also looks familiar to the typeface choice we have decided upon for the Yoke branding, therefore it would be great to do some along similar lines because it works so well. I really like how the type sits behind the image, giving it an extra layer.

We intend the A6 postcards to be screen printed, therefore the imagery we will use will be our interpretation of the brief that we wrote for those who want to submit to the exhibition.

Brief
'Submissions can take any form of the theme. It could reflect directly on past conversations, forms of interaction or it could spread further afield to what you think communication is today.'

My Responses.
We both went away and initially we said to design 2 designs each, but we both did more than this and ended up designing 6 each. This was goo though as it gave us more designs to work with and mix and match to create different variations for the screen prints.

My responses to the idea of dialogue were all focused around different ways we communicate and how you can illustrate communication between people. This could take the form of a conversation or show someone that communicates for a living.

Martin Luther King was the president of America, he is a noticeable figure and known for the way in which he expressed himself and his thoughts and opinions through speech and communicating to the society. A quote taken from a speech of his was ' A riot is a language of the unheard' as he spoke about language and speech a lot within his own speeches I thought this related to the idea of dialogue well. The design is simply made up from a halftone image and the quote in type.

I initially designed this design in colour as it was easier for me to build up the layers of the design and see how it would work when screen printed. The idea of this design is that the two figures in the centre of the page are having a conversation about each of their lives. What it was like growing up and  how life is now with grand children. The imagery around the two figures illustrates certain aspects from their lives and builds up what would have been spoke about in a conversation.

This is the black and white halftone image to screen print.

A quote about communication, which is one I have thought about a lot, it puts into perspective the idea of communicate and how you design. As a piece of type, this would work well to be printed over the top of a image based design.

This design is a script from a play. A play is built up of characters with dialogue running between them. I think a script in itself has an interesting design aesthetic, that ultimately is designed purely for ease of communication to the reader so they can then communicate the character they are playing within the play to the audience.

A protest or demonstration is a form of communication and dialogue, within these events there are always protest signs which communicate the main factors in why they are doing it in the first place, this design relates to idea of that.

The final design is a simple vector pattern of speech marks. Speech is how we communicate to each other and a speech mark is a clear way of communicating this within a design. The speech marks are drawn in different stroke weights, this is to relate to the idea of the boldness or quietness that you can speak in.

These 6 designs are quite simple in the design itself, but all communicate the idea of dialogue. I think these all work well as a set of designs which can be mixed with other designs to create a final screen print. It will be interesting to see how Eve responds to the theme and how the designs will fit together to create the screen prints.
