Brief 3 // Iconic Cities // City Title Pages

As stated in the concept post, the idea of the travel guide is to take on the aesthetic of airport and luggage tags as these link directly to travel. From the research carried out on this specific area I had a lot of inspiration for the title pages.

To plan out what the design for each page would be based on and so I had a rough idea of how to design it, I firstly sketched out a couple of ideas for each one.

insert design sheets

When it came to designing them digitally, it was a lot easier because of this first planning stage and knowing how each one was going to be designed. It came down to using the type, codes and different shapes to resemble elements of a ticket.

Initial Designs - Black & White

Initially I designed each of the title pages in black and white and used basic shapes and lines to create the design. Below is the collection of each title page.

Here you can see each design for each title page. Looking through each design, every one has very similar elements and uses the same design style throughout, this has created a set of 10 title pages which all have a consistent design aesthetic running across them all. On there own these designs could work as a set of poster on their own, but adding them within the guide and putting them into to context of the format, content and the whole design package brings the concept to life within the guide and communicates the right message to the reader.

Developed Designs - Colour

From designing the initial designs, adding colour was the next step. In order to create a colour palette, i looked into the colours of each city. From researching into this I found that the 10 cities i choose had very similar colour schemes, these all were based around blue, red and yellow. This formed the basic colour palette, from this i choose two of each colour to give a variety within the colour palette.

Below is the final designs of each of the title pages with the added colour. Below is the full collection of the title pages.

Each individual title page is shown, again I think this reassures the concept and puts it into practice even more. From taking the design from the inspiration of airport and luggage tags and then using the colours of each of the city, this uses the best elements of all the researched material and pulls them all together to create the title pages.

This will also add colour to the guide and make it much more interesting and engaging when the user reads through it.

From the previous designs to these ones, I think each design now has its own identity and feels more of a design, one which each stands out differently. Even though each one is designed around the same elements and style, they all come together and fit together as a set. The colour separates each design and highlights certain parts of each one.

I was happy with the designs in the first place, but now the colour has been added, I think they have been brought to another level and now work much better as a design.
