After designing the city title pages and laying out the master page spreads for the travel guide. I started to think how the content would be placed into the guide and within the pages of the guide. As I am working on the idea of the airport travel tags, I wanted this to carry through within the guide, but I didn't want it to take over the guide, so getting the balance was crucial for the guide to be a success.
Before starting to design the full guide, I created one of the sections of the guide to make sure it all fit together well, the design was consistent across all the pages in the section and that it communicated the information.
Every title page, will have this design aesthetic and take on the appearance of a airport tag. On each title page the colours of the city as been used. Every title page will be designed differently, but all be consistent with the style of the design.
Moving on to the introduction page, this will introduce each city to the reader. Here information about the city will be displayed, with basic information such as accommodation cost etc will be displayed at the bottom of the page. As you can see here the design of the master page works well in keeping the consistent style of the title page carrying through the travel guide. The content of this also lays well within the page design, but also stands out against the whole design.
The next 3 pages include information on top attractions within the city. Each page holds two attractions which on the dotted line through the middle of the page will perforate, so the reader can take it with them, this will also be perforated down the left hand side of the page, this again means any page within the guide can be ripped out and taken with the user.
The final page of each section is the map of the city. This map here is just for placement, but I will trace over a map of each city to simplify it and make it easier for the users to read. The main attractions will be displayed on the map.
I think this mock up chapter shows the concept of the whole guide and put across the design of the whole thing. The city being represented in a aesthetic that relates to the idea of travel itself works well for this guide. The photography used in the guide represents the city and brings the experience of it alive within the guide.
I am really pleased with the design of the guide, I think coming up with this concept and keeping true to it has really helped the success of the design. Working it all out in the first place and trying out lots of different designs on paper to start has helped develop this idea and now the final design is put into context with all the content it all comes together and provides an interest design aesthetic, one which I haven't seen in a travel guide before.
