Brief 1 // imprint // Business Card Research

Now I have the idea of how I am going to create the logo and the type of logo it is going to be, I am starting to look at the design and layout for the business stationary. Firstly I have looked at the business card as this will mainly be focussed on the logo which is going to be the first element of the brand i will design.

After looking at a wide range of business cards and the design and layout of these i have collected a range of images above to show the ones which i think will give me the best inspiration and the sort of design that i want to create for the business card.

I am wanting to bring in printing techniques to the brief and i intend to use either emboss or deboss throughout the business stationary mainly on the logo.

On nearly all of the products above, the front of business card has just the logo, but because these are more interesting logos and ones which create a personality to the brand it works well having a clear and bold logo on the front.
The back of the card is the where the design differs and the main area in which i want to focus on. I like the idea of using columns within the design, splitting the card into two but having it at a 1:2 ratio, so the second column is twice the size of the first. This gives the layout an interesting feel, but also practical as the main information, which will be the largest of body copy will be contained in the larger column.

The second idea is again to split the cards into two columns but contain all the information on one side with a logo on the other, this could work as there will be alot of white space which will give the body copy more room around it and make it more legible, but could also look unbalanced.

In the document above, these two ideas are illustrated in various forms. Byrce walter and motherbird both show the idea of the first one, have a 1:2 ratio on the columns within the design. I think that these two design balance out well, they are both legible in the body copy and makes the card a little more interesting aesthetically. Its not just right or left aligned with the content all cramped together. This system will give space and adaptability throughout the business card and also be a system which i can carry through all the business stationary to create a identity for the stationary.

Studio Sammut and inform display the second idea. I still think that this design is effective and has a good aesthetical feel to it,  but compared to the first idea, the body copy is alot more cramped together as there is more copy, the leading is much tighter so its harder to read for the user.
